February 2017: Join us for the opening symposium of the BIOINTERFACE doctoral school

We will officially open the BIOINTERFACE doctoral in a joint symposium with the doctoral school TU-D. The one-day event is going to take place on April 5th 2017. The program includes welcoming words by several Vicerectors of TU Wien, presentations of both doctoral schools by their coordinators, short presentations by two PhD students, and invited lectures by internationally renowned scientists. The event is going to take place in the venue TutheSky, with a wonderful view over Vienna, and provides ample opportunity for discussion during catered breaks. The detailed program is available here. December 2016: Book by Ille C. Gebeshuber shortlisted for "Science Book of the Year" award

Ille C. Gebeshuber's book "Wo die Maschinen wachsen: Wie Lösungen aus dem Dschungel unser Leben verändern werden" is on the Shortlist for the science book of the year. Voting can still take place until January 9, 2017 at www.wissenschaftsbuch.at

June 30th 2016: NATURE COVER FOR ELECTROCHEMICAL SWITCHING OF STICTION AND ADHESION

A paper by Stijn Mertens et al. features on this week's cover of Nature.  The authors demonstrate that the adhesive properties of a single boron nitride layer on rhodium can be switched forth and back using electrochemistry.  This discovery represents the first responsive surface that does not involve organic molecules.  Further reading: Paper | Press Release 

TU Wien Doctoral School “BIOINTERFACE” granted - call for applications
to follow in due course!

The BIOINTERFACE network enters a new stage and will flourish even more for the next three years: our proposal for a TU Wien Doctoral School has been accepted and a call for applications for 10 PhD positions will be opened in due course!  

All PIs are eager to explore the interface between inorganic and bioorganic systems together with a group of highly motivated PhD candidates. Thank you & well done to all biointerface PIs!

May 25th 2016: FIVE PRO DIDACTICA TEACHING AWARDS GO TO BIOINTERFACE PIs

The biointerface PIs Marko Mihovilovic and Miriam Unterlass won a total of 5 awards at this year's ProDidactica. Marko scored 1st place in the categories "lab course - best overall lab course" and "lab courses - best script", and 2nd in the category "lab courses - best supervision", all three for the lab course "Basics in chemical synthesis" (Grundlagen der Chemie). Miriam was awarded the 2nd place in the categories "lectures - best presentation" and "lectures - fairest exam". The ProDidactica is a teaching award taking place every two years and honoring the best courses in the BSc curriculum "Technical Chemistry" at TU Wien and is based on students' votes. We congratulate both awardees!

February 4th 2016: PAPER ON PRODUCING COLORS BY STAMPING NANOSTRUCTURES

Sigi Zobl (Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna), PhD student in the group of Ille C. Gebeshuber developed a revolutionary method to stamp nanostructures and generate color, which got published in the high quality journal Bioinspiration & Biomimetics. Further reading: Paper | Erratum.

 

February 3rd 2016: MASTER THESIS RECEIVING THE FH WELS INNOVATIONaward 

Katja Hölzl, MSc student in the research group of Aleksandr Ovsianikov, won the INNOVATIONaward FH Wels for her master's thesis in the category of science. This price is awarded to the master's thesis with the most innovative idea to solve critical problems in certain fields of research. The thesis addressed the development of three-dimensional cell culture systems using photosensitive hydrogels.

October 1st 2015: E-CAM: A NEW EUROPEAN CENTER OF EXCELLENCE FOR SOFTWARE, TRAINING AND COSULTANCY IN SIMULATION AND MODELING

E-CAM, a new European Center of Excellence for Software, Training and Consultancy in Simulation and Modelling, became operational as of October 1st, 2015; its 18 institutional partners reunite 15 CECAM nodes (among those the Viennese Node, DaCAM, directed by Gerhard Kahl), two PRACE Centres and once centre for industrial computing. The total budget, provided by the EU and by CECAM, amounts to 5.8 Mio Euros.

April 21st 2015: PRESS RELEASE ON NATURE COMMUNICATIONS PAPER BY SEVCSIK et al.

Eva Sevcsik, Gerhard J. Schütz and coworkers have discovered that ordered lipid domains do not exist in the live cell plasma membrane, thereby questioning a cornerstone of the lipid raft hypothesis. This finding was recently published in Nature Communications and has been featured by various press releases.

February 17th 2015: PRESS RELEASE ON ANGEWANDTE CHEMIE PAPER BY MERTENS et al.

Charged molecules can self-organize on a gold surface to form highly structured motifs. In an effort led by Stijn Mertens, it was demonstrated that, under electrochemical conditions, this principle can be extended from flat structures into the third dimension. The results have been published in the journal Angewandte Chemie, and were highlighted by Nature Chemistry.

January 18th-22nd 2015: 583rd HERAEUS SEMINAR ON ELECTROCHEMICAL SURFACE SCIENCE

Stijn Mertens co-organizes the 583rd Wilhelm and Else Heraeus Seminar on Electrochemical Surface Science in Physikzentrum Bad Honnef, Germany.  The seminar aims to bring together the new generation of electrochemical physicists to discuss how electrochemical methods and concepts can enable efficient progress in surface science of electrified solid/liquid interfaces. 

 

Dec. 22nd 2014: PRESS RELEASE ON PNAS PAPER BY KLOTZSCH et al.

Enrico Klotzsch, Gerhard J. Schütz and coworkers have mapped the distribution of various mitochondrial proteins below the diffraction limit of light microscopy. The finding was published in PNAS.
